Shuttered Goals: Elevate Your Resolutions with my Masters of Photography Course

As the new year unfolds, many of us reflect on the past and set new goals for the future. For me, this year is all about personal growth and following through on the promises I make to myself. One of my resolutions is to learn a new skill, to open myself up to something unfamiliar, and to hone that skill until it becomes second nature.

Relearning how to organize and develop slides.

Almost 30 years ago, I had the same New Year resolution- to learn a new skill until I could count myself among the masters. So, with a borrowed camera and a passion for learning, I set off on a journey that I would have never guessed would change my life forever- photography.

Back then, in the late ’90s and early 2000s, the internet was a new frontier. I had to send physical letters to the people I wanted to learn from and leave my kids in after-school programs or with friends to attend night classes. I wish I had the resources available now back then. I wonder how different things would have turned out if I was able to learn from the masters while also being able to be more present for my family. I don't regret my choices, but the “what if” still lingers in my mind.

At the time, it was hard to hold myself accountable, to show up for myself and to dedicate time, energy and effort to something unfamiliar but exciting. One of the keys to successful resolution keeping is accountability.

Immerse yourself in a community of like-minded individuals, share your progress and draw inspiration from your fellow learners. A sense of camaraderie will help fuel your passion and keep you motivated.

At the same time, don’t compare yourself to others. You never know where someone is on their journey, and while you might feel like you aren't progressing as fast as you'd like, consider that it has taken me over 20 years to develop my skills, and I am still learning something new all the time.

Sticking to a resolution is challenging. After a few weeks or months, life gets in the way, and we forget what we promised ourselves at the beginning of the year. This is where I want to help you with a resource I wish I had all those years ago- my Masters of Photography course.
