Keeping Hope

Writer's picture: Cristina MittermeierCristina Mittermeier

We live in extraordinary times and the future appears uncertain and daunting, making it difficult to maintain hope. When our environment, freedoms, and livelihoods are threatened, it can feel absurd to strive for hope; however, we must not let it slip away. How do we bridge this gap? For me, it begins with gratitude. While it may sound cliché or trivial, taking a brief moment amid our busy lives to reflect on the positivity around us can uplift our spirits and help make the larger obstacles seem less daunting.

Becoming mindful of small gestures—like a stranger's kindness, the sun's warm embrace, or the joy of reuniting with loved ones during the holidays—can profoundly affect our mental well-being. By focusing on the progress we have made rather than on the massive challenges ahead, we can foster a belief that, despite the difficulties, the world is not so bleak after all.

One of my favourite ways to keep a positive outlook is to actively picture the world I want to live in and think about the steps I can take to turn that dream into reality. Taking action truly fuels hope! If you can come up with just one small step to improve your situation—like creating a simple to-do list—you'll likely feel the weight of hopelessness starts to lift!

We can greatly benefit from being mindful and deliberately nurturing positivity, especially amid uncertainty and fear. Life frequently resembles a confusing maze; while the exit may not always be visible, continuing to move forward will ultimately lead you to a better place.

It is important to remember that we cannot wait for others to take action. The challenges we face are significant and deserve our attention; we cannot just sit back and hope for change. Any fear I might feel is tiny compared to my determination to make a difference, and I always find myself asking, "How can I help?"

Often, the most effective way to address our issues is by extending a helping hand to someone else.

My motivation to advocate for a cause comes from the same source that nurtures my hope and optimism. I truly believe we can make the world a better place, so I stand up for those who might not have a voice. To create meaningful change, we must hold into hope within ourselves.

ALL THAT GLITTERS | Bahamas, 2021

Even after all these years, I am still an activist. I still focus all my energy on the problems that seem impossible to solve. Sometimes, the importance of that mission is enough to push me forward. But when the fear starts to take hold, when the problem becomes too big for me to see the path ahead, I remind myself of the importance of small actions. Where can I start? What is the first step? I have taken a million first steps throughout my life; I will take a million more. I know I will never truly be lost because I have hope in my heart; it has always been there.

In our most challenging times, hope is a gift we give ourselves. This is the true meaning of inner strength.
